Inside Out – No Spiritual Surrender

Release Date: 1990

Before Rage Against the Machine, Zack de la Rocha was raging in a legitimate metallic hardcore band Inside Out. One of the progenitors of this mixture of genres, in fact. Pretty much all the tropes associated with hardcore are on full display here – the way the phrases are vocalized, the lyrical content. At this point, however, I don’t think anyone would have foreseen Rage Against the Machine coming, or how differently Zack de la Rocha sings in that project. This is a Hardcore performance through and through. It’s practically impossible to tell it’s the same vocalist. It’s pretty neat that Rage are associated with such an influential band in a much less mainstream subset of music, but here you have it. It’s an extremely solid and, at the time, cutting edge, EP to boot.
