Childish Gambino – STN MTN / Kauai

STN MTN is a mixtape that contains several firsts for Gambino. It’s a concept mixtape where Glover is asleep dreaming he “ran Atlanta”, with songs based off mostly early-to-mid 2000’s southern hip hop. The mixtape ends with Glover awaking from this dream on the Hawaiian island, Kauai.

Childish Gambino – EP

By the time of Childish Gambino’s debutĀ EP in 2011, pretty much all the elements that make him great are already there – great lyrics and word play; generally soft and emotive, feelsy rap, though sometimes high energy with more stereotypical boastful and clever lyrics… really, it sounds exactly like Camp.

Kanye West – Yeezus

Right off the bat, one is stricken by the abrasiveness of the synth parts, the distorted drums, and the abrupt shifts in sound and style. This album sounds like commercial appeal was one of the last things on Ye’s mind. A truly bold move for such a high-profile artist.

U.S. Girls – In A Poem Unlimited

In A Poem Unlimited, loosely built around a framework of experimental electro-pop, covers an astonishing amount of ground during the course of its 11 tracks. The album frequently steps outside even these loose bounds though, drawing direct influence from several decades of musical movements.

Angel Du$t – Rock the Fuck on Forever

Angel Du$t’s Rock the Fuck on Forever is a unique entry in hardcore’s canon. Imagine if you will, the Ramones – keeping the melodic hooks and raw sound in mind, except instead of the band looking to The Beach Boys and ’50’s Rock N’ Roll for inspiration, look towards modern hardcore and several era’s of rock-based pop music.

AFI – Crash Love

AFI’s return to guitar driven rock-based ’80s inspired pop music is a largely successful change in sound, though Crash Love ultimately proved to be the end of their mainstream popularity.
